Yoga Classes Balance Flexibility and Strength, with an Emphasis on Alignment and Inward Focus

At the heart of the yoga asana practice lies a creative tension between opposites – contraction and expansion, stillness and flow, effort and surrender, repetition and spontaneity, technique and intuition, ancient tradition and modern movement science. Embracing this creative tension can lead the practitioner to a broader and more inclusive perspective, a deeper state of presence.

These energizing classes balance flexibility and strength, with an emphasis on alignment and inward focus.


Cultivating alignment within the body builds a strong, stable structure that allows for the inner free flow of energy. Kind observation of the internal state creates fertile ground for transformation. This mindful, alignment-based approach can be practiced through flowing poses or with longer holds. It can be vigorous and active or restful and restorative. Whatever the expression, the combination of these two elements – the intentional placement of the physical body and a state of deep, internal awareness, aided by the breath – serves to balance the system and establish a sense of wholeness.

These classes are designed to awaken the sleeping portions of the body and correct habitual imbalances. In the beginning, much physical effort is often needed to energize the sluggish areas and transform postural habits. Muscles must be strengthened. Determination is needed to identify and modify imbalances stemming from overuse or lack of use of specific muscle groups. Through steady repetition, however, new neural pathways are established and actions that were once effortful become natural, fluid and automatic. This is a practice of balancing effort and ease.
